Did you know that capybaras can bark when they feel that they are in danger? Capybaras live in the rainforest. Capybaras use creative methods to escape from predators. Capybaras are found in most countries in South America. They are part aquatic so they spend most of their time in vegetation around rivers, lakes, ponds, marshes and swamps. Capybaras mostly live in small groups of about 10 capybaras, made up of a dominant male, one or more females, several young. During the wet season, 40 or more capybaras may be found together. Capybaras are found in the forest floor layer of the rainforest. They sleep in the water, mud, and vegetation. Capybaras are the biggest rodents on earth. They can weigh more than 100 pounds and grow to be 4 feet long and 2 feet tall. Capybaras have brown fur. They have a big barrel shaped body which sits on legs, shorter in the front than the back. Capybaras have partially webbed feet, which help to swim through the water or swampy areas. Similar to a hippo, the capybara’s eyes, nose, and ears are on the top of its head, allowing it to look above the water for a breath of air and a check for predators while the rest of the body remains below the water. Capybaras are herbivores and eat plants and vegetation in the water. Capybaras are able to use their webbed feet to swim in swamps. This is how they get to the plants under the water. An adult capybara can eat 6 to 8 pounds of grass a day. Capybaras are rodents, which means they have big front teeth. This helps them with eating plants, melons, grains, and squashes. The capybaras will eat the melons, grains, and squashes during the dry season or if water levels are low. Capybaras are threatened by jaguars, snakes and baby capybaras are threatened by ocelots and eagles. To avoid these predators, when capybaras are sleeping other capybaras will guard them to make sure they are safe. However, humans are also a threat. Humans hunt capybaras for their meat and their hide which can be made into leather. A threat to the capybara’s environment is deforestation. Capybaras are very interesting rodents. Capybaras can hold their breath for up to 5 minutes under the water. Seventy percent of a capybaras’ diet is only three to five types of plants. Some extinct relatives of capybaras were twice as long and 8 times the weight of a modern capybara. Fossils of the extinct Pinckney’s capybara were found on San Diego's Oceanside. Capybaras are actually rodents, they look like hippos. This lets them swim and live in the water. People can stop littering to help the capybara’s environment.
